Message Pure distilled water is a better heat transfer fluid than a distilled-water-coolant-mix. Antifreeze reduces the heat transfer ability of pure water.

That being said, antifreeze also reduces the freezing point, AND increases the boiling point of pure water. For this reason, most people choose to run antifreeze (in addition to its lubrication and anti-corrosive properties).

More info here: La-Z-Link.

Is pure water optimal for the track? Probably not. It's a better heat transfer fluid (good), but it has a lower boiling point (not good).
